Australian songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Carla Dal Forno, currently based in London, drifted onto the radar over the last few years with sparse post-punk records that feel like transmissions from the other side of the ghostly veil. 'You Know What It’s Like' was her debut solo album, following time in cult Melbourne group Mole House and an earlier association with Blackest Ever Black as a member of Fingers and Tarcar. And late last year she released 'The Garden' EP.
Her voice is an extraordinary instrument: both disarmingly conversational and glacially detached. It has something of the bedsit urbanity of Anna Domino, Marine Girls, Antena, or Helen Johnstone –stoned and deadpan –but it can also summon a gothic intensity that Nico or Kendra Smith would approve of. dal Forno writes, plays, arranges and records every note herself, making psychedelic folk and dream pop for the masses.
Brooklyn-based Faten Kanaan uses synthesizers to slowly build songs that are inspired by cinematic forms: from sweeping landscapes and quiet love stories, to the patterned tension of 1970s horror film soundtracks. Kanaan focuses on bringing a human touch to electronic music that highlights the limitations and relationships between man, nature, and machine: the drifting of time, the dystopian grittiness, and the bittersweet but hopeful sense of nostalgia.
Cyclical patterns are central to her most recents compositions: exploring harmony and counterpoint as they ebb & are reincarnated. Loosely inspired by medieval canons/rounds and Baroque structures, the music hovers between ambient/electronic experimentations and semi-classical traditions.
