Nature based faiths are often ridiculed and the spiritual traditions that pre-date the modern religions we know today are rarely investigated. Join us as experts and practitioners explore African spiritual philosophies, a topic shrouded in much mystique, negativity, superstition and ignorance.
We will be showing clips from 'Ancestral Voices' a documentary exploring African spiritual philosophies and practices across millennia from the ancient Black Egyptians to contemporary times. The panel will incitefully discuss the African conception of the Creator/‘God’, nature and the natural forces, nature of humanity, ancestral veneration and communication, various rituals and forms of prayers for living an African-centred spiritual life. Our panel will include the directors of the documentary for a Q&A.
The other member of the panel is Dr Michelle Yaa Asantewa who completed a PhD on the Guyanese Komfa ritual. Because of stigma and labelling Guyanese practitioners of Komfa and other spiritual arts usually have to practice their arts in secret. Dr. Asantewa has written three books that are all intricately tied to the Guyanese experience.
Leona Nichole Black is a writer and cultural theorist, tarot therapist and counselling astrologer. Ms Black will offer an incite into being a black tarot reader, a practise often stigmatised within the black community.
The event will take place in Worsely Medical LT 7.35.
